Auntie Shanty was established in 2016 to celebrate the amazing sea shanty tradition and safeguard it for the future by making it as inclusive as possible. They do this in two ways: firstly, by inviting singers to omit, rewrite and/or contextualise those odd lyrics that have aged rather poorly and now risk giving the impression to some groups of people that they aren’t welcome in this fantastic music. Secondly, they are a woman-led session with a proudly feminist ethos, and want to particularly encourage the leading of songs by women – but *all* singers are welcome to come lend their voices and join the jovial crew!
