Family events

There's something for everyone at Folk Weekend; children of any age are welcome at ALL our events, but to make it easier for you to see which ones would suit you we've picked out a few below which we think families will really enjoy.

Did you know all children under the age of 12 get FREE entry to any event on the programme when they are accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket!

Make some noise!

Mini melodeons – Saturday 21st, 10am Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre

The whole family can have a go at squeezing with our mini melodeons! We have ten available to try out so do pop along and have a go. Expert squeezer Ollie King will be there to point you in the right direction.

Tiny Tots Sing – Saturday 21st, 11am Westgate Children's Library

If you're a small person with a big voice, why not try our Tiny Tots singing sessions (aimed at under 5's) for actions, instruments, and puppets! These sessions are led by singer (and mum of two!) Lizzy Gibson.

Hands On Harps – Saturday 21st, 2.30pm Westgate Children's Library

Get your hands on a harp and see what sounds you can make! In this drop-in session we will be exploring our harps and making soundscapes led by stories, aimed at ages 7 and under. Parents welcome to join in too! Harps provided. For the last 30 minutes of the session there will be a mini-workshop aimed at ages 8 and over, which will guide you through harp basics: how our hands work and what our notes are. We will also learn a tune!

Song Writing - Saturday 21st, 1pm Westgate Children's Library

If you're feeling creative, why not come along and help David Gibb make up some new songs! Who knows, he may even sing them in his show later..!

Chilling out

Family Folk Show – Saturday 21st, 3.30pm Oxford Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre

Join David Gibb on a musical journey through his hilarious and often surreal imagination, where bears live in the cupboard under the stairs, wolves are roaming the corridors at school, and trips to the moon are a regular occurrence.

Storytelling - Sunday 22nd, 11am Weston Library

Our professional storyteller (and clown!) Alys will ease you into Sunday morning with some fabulous stories.

Dance off some energy

Family and Special Needs ceilidh – Saturday 21st, 11am St Barnabas Church

Our family ceilidh is always popular, and again this year we are focusing on making it extra-inclusive, so that EVERYONE can join in. Ceilidh dancing is similar to country dancing – the dances are taught beforehand and all the steps are practised before the music starts. Wheelchair users are welcome, and dances will be adapted to make sure they are accessible for everyone.

Morris workshop – Sunday 22nd, 2pm Oxford Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre

If you've ever fancied having a go at morris dancing, now is your chance! Fun for all the family – don't forget to wear comfy shoes!

Children are very welcome at all of our events, but if you are blessed with energetic and vociferous offspring please do be mindful of our other audience members who are there to enjoy the music! For Health and Safety reasons please do not let children run around during seated concerts, particularly near the sound desk or PA equipment. Stewards are present at all venues (wearing high-vis jackets) and can assist in finding somewhere for your family to sit and enjoy the events.
